I’m thinking specifically of Trent’s Last Case, the famous detective novel published in by E.C. Bentley, and how my view of it has flipped between two readings 35 years a teenager of 14 or 15, when I first read it, I knew enough about the history of detective fiction to know the book’s stature as a classic of.
I have been aware of this novel for a while now and aware of its’ canonical status, often being cited as the text which heralded in the golden age detective fiction era.
